Deciding to have breast augmentation is a big decision that comes with many different choices. What implant volume will give you the breast size you want? What type of implant will work best for you? What about implant profile?
While you will go over many of these options with your surgeon during a consultation, you can get a good answer to one question from home with the help of items you may have on hand.
When it comes to determining the best volume for your implants, breast augmentation rice sizers are a great place to start.
Rice Sizers and the Rice Test
Finding the perfect implant size for your breast augmentation is important from the start. Unfortunately, a common cause of breast revision surgery occurs when women are unhappy with their chosen implant size and wish they had gone larger. The rice test can help with this.
What You Need
- A pair of pantyhose or knee-highs
- Dry, uncooked rice
- Wide-mouth drinking glass
- Measuring cup
- Scissors
- Minimal compression sports bra
Rice to CC Measurements
The chart below provides a guide to how much rice equals common CC measurements for breast implants. Playing around with different amounts lets you see which size is best for you.
Rice sizers can give you a good idea of breast size, but keep in mind implants will sit differently and implant profile also makes a difference.
- 1/2 cup rice = 120cc
- 1/2 cup + 1Tbsp = 150cc
- 1 cup = 240cc
- 1 1/4 cup = 300cc
- 1 1/4 cup + 3 Tbsp + 1tsp = 350cc
- 1 1/2 cup +3 Tbsp = 400cc
If these measurements still aren’t right for you, an online conversion calculator can help you with smaller or larger numbers.
Making the Rice Implants
- Cut two, 12-inch long tubes with the pantyhose and tie a knot in one end (if using knee-highs, you can skip this step)
- Place the pantyhose tube into the drinking glass, fitting the open end around the mouth of the glass to create an opening
- Measure the amount of rice that matches your desired volume and pour it into the pantyhose
- Tie off the open end of the pantyhose and repeat with the other piece
- Insert the rice sizers into your bra and spend some time with that size. Go about your regular day and see if that size meets your expectations. If it doesn’t, remove or add rice and try again.
While the rice test can help give you a better understanding of implant volume, other factors, such as implant placement and breast implant profile, will affect how your implants look.
