As a result of pregnancy, nursing or simply the body’s natural aging process, many women begin to notice sagging in their breasts. When this occurs, a breast lift (mastopexy) can help restore a firmer, perkier breast silhouette for a more youthful appearance.
Contact us online or call one of our cosmetic centers, conveniently located in Noblesville, Indianapolis and Marion, to learn more about your options for breast enhancement. Our team of surgeons has helped thousands of women throughout the state of Indiana feel better about the way they look with the help of a breast lift.
About Breast Lift Surgery
Breast lift surgery is a common procedure that can offer excellent results on its own or in combination with other breast enhancement surgery. Often, women choose to add breast implants to their breast lift in order to enjoy a larger cup size while also improving breast position.
During your consultation, one of our cosmetic surgeons will go over your goals with you in greater detail, as well as help you decide whether a combination procedure may be best for helping you meet those goals.
Your Breast Lift Procedure
Breast lifts are performed on an outpatient basis using general or local anesthesia. The duration of your procedure will depend on how complex it is, although most breast lifts take about 2 hours.
There are three primary incision options that may be used during mastopexy:
The Anchor Incision
The anchor incision technique is the most common surgical approach to a breast lift, and involves creating three incisions. The first is made around the areola, the next runs from the bottom of the areola down to the breast crease and the third incision follows the horizontal breast crease.
Working through these incisions, your cosmetic surgeon can remove excess skin from the lower portion of the breast. Areolas that have been stretched can be resized, and the tissue is repositioned to reshape the breast. The breast tissue is reshaped for a fuller profile, and nipples are centered in their new position.
The Lollipop Incision
Many women considering mastopexy are concerned about scarring. To minimize scars, our cosmetic surgeons can perform what’s known as a “lollipop” incision, which avoids the third, horizontal incision beneath the breast that’s used in a traditional breast lift.
The Periareolar or “Donut” Incision
The periareolar incision, used for what’s sometimes called a “donut lift,” can reduce the appearance of breast lift scars even further, as only a single incision is made around the areola. Although the donut lift does offer a minimal scar breast lift technique, the limited access to the breast tissue means this mastopexy technique is not best for every woman.
Your Recovery & Results
Following your breast lift surgery, bed rest is generally recommended for the first day. For the next few days following surgery, you may be asked to wear surgical dressings or a special post-surgical bra.
Some degree of swelling, bruising and tenderness can be expected, but these symptoms should subside on their own over the following days and weeks. To minimize discomfort during your recovery, oral medication can be prescribed by your cosmetic surgeon, who may also prescribe antibiotics.
Most women are able to return to work within the first week following surgery. Within 1 to 2 weeks, all sutures will be removed. Normal physical activities can be gradually reintroduced over the following 4 to 6 weeks. Although some scarring can be expected following a breast lift, our cosmetic surgeons can recommend a variety of scar reduction techniques for a beautiful final result.
After your breast lift surgery, you should see a clear improvement in the position and shape of your breasts, along with a firmer texture and more youthful appearance overall.
