About Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast enlargement offers women a range of options for increasing breast size. If sagging is a concern, breast implants can be combined with a breast lift for a firmer, lifted appearance as well as a boost in volume.
During your initial consultation, you’ll be able to discuss your goals with one of our cosmetic surgeons, as well as any concerns you may have. They will assess your needs and give you a clear sense of what you can expect from your breast enhancement surgery.
Your Breast Enlargement Procedure
Breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis using a general or local anesthesia, and typically only takes 2 hours. If breast enhancement is done as part of a more comprehensive combination of procedures, like a mommy makeover, more time may be necessary.
Most typically, breast augmentation begins with an incision made within the natural breast crease below the breast (inframammary incision). Alternatively, your cosmetic surgeon may use a periareolar incision, which follows the curve of the lower portion of the areola (the darker area around your nipple).
After the incision is made, your surgeon creates a pocket under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle. The implant is securely positioned in the pocket, and small sutures are used to close the incision.
There are two main types of breast implants:
Saline Breast Implants
After they have been placed within the breast pocket, saline implants are filled with a sterile saline solution. This allows for a slightly smaller incision than is normally used for silicone implants.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone implants consist of an outer silicone shell which is pre-filled with silicone gel. Many women find that this implant type closely resembles the look and feel of natural breasts. Because the silicone gel maintains its shape, silicone breast implants won’t deflate in the unlikely event of a rupture.
Your Recovery & Results
After your breast augmentation, it’s common to experience mild swelling, bruising and tenderness, though these should subside quickly over the first several days and weeks. During your initial recovery, some discomfort is normal and can be controlled with oral medication. Your cosmetic surgeon may recommend that you wear a post-surgical sports bra for several weeks to help make your recovery as comfortable as possible.
Although time away from work will depend on your job’s physical demands, most women are able to return to work within 1 to 2 weeks following breast augmentation. During the earliest weeks of recovery, you can expect to gradually ramp up your physical activity to include walking and low-impact exercise. Heavy lifting and vigorous activity should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks.
You’ll see an immediate increase in breast size after your breast enlargement surgery. As swelling diminishes, you’ll notice your breast implants settle into their final position, and should see your final results by about 6 months after your procedure. With the help of breast implants, you can enjoy a flattering, proportionate figure that helps you feel more feminine.
